Where Else Has Your Creativity Taken you?

I know many of you write fiction, and some non-fiction and poetry. I do all three, but not equally.

I dabble in some pathetic crocheting and knitting. I love to cook and when there's time and I'll play some very depressing Sense and Sensibility-type songs on the piano. I love drawing though I haven't picked up a drawing pencil in a while.

But what I want to know is...what else do you do that is creative?

Dish, please!

I paint murals. All my kids have one on the walls of their bedrooms. I'm also a dance. Best therapy, aside from writing, ever. lol

Besides writing, I look to my day job--interior design. I work with color, fabrics, furniture, the works. It's fun, but I like writing better. :)
HAve a great weekend!

Besides writing, I like to sew complicated patterns. I love having something that fits perfectly instead of something that's too big, too short, too meh.

I used to play piano, but my kids are now better than I am so I just listen.

Cooking (inventing new recipes is great fun), sketching, sewing, origami, wood carving, photography, potting, flute, and djembe.

I may not be very good at any of them (except cooking, I'm told) but I sure do get a kick out of indulging myself. ; j

I crochet, too. I only know single chain, so basically my crocheting is back and forth, back and forth until I have a set number of rows and columns. When I have enough of those, I sew them together for a blanket. Not huge in the creativity arena, but I don't have to think while I'm doing it, so it's perfect for thinking about other things. I used to draw. I'd love to learn how to paint and sculpt, but who's got the time.

I love drawing and painting, but I hardly ever do it anymore. Cooking something interesting. Making scrapbooks with my daughter. Thinking up new activities for my students (or thinking of yet another way to get their attention). I love doing something creative; mostly it turns out to be writing.

Clara said...

I draw too! But I also haven't picked up a pencil in quite some time. Oh and thanks for the medical monday, it was fabulous!

A little photography, a little scrapbooking--but right now, a baby afghan for a soon-to-come new grandbaby :-)

Liza said...

I take photos and I cook. Sometimes they feel almost as good as writing.

C. N. Nevets said...

I'm a pretty serious photographer, and even had a minor, local exhibition when I was in college.

I love to cook creatively and by instinct, eschewing the very concept of recipes.

I'm a mediocre guitar-player and an almost-mediocre singer -- and was, for years, a prolific song-writer.

I did radio comedy and voice acting while I was in college and still lend my voice to occasional projects around here.

Also, write screenplays.

Hmmmm. I think that's most of the creative stuff I do.

Saumya said...

I cannot draw to save my life but I am trying to get into photography :) You are so talented!!

Lo said...

Photography for sure, and ever since we went to Australia last year, my bf and I are really into wine (it's amazing how much art and science goes into creating the flavours, learning about taste, and matching with food etc.!)

Renae said...

I don't consider myself a creative person so writing is pretty much it for me. I do scrapbook however if and when I ever have time.

Angela Felsted said...

I used to arrange music, religious stuff mostly.

I have a particular love for children's songs and liked to write instrument parts to go with them.

Shellie said...

It's amazing how many writers like to paint and draw as well. I like to do portraits. I guess once you kick start one aspect of your creative mind, it jump start other parts as well.

Roland D. Yeomans said...

What a great way to discover different facets of our blog friends, Lydia.

Wish I could paint like my father. Alas, stick figures are the best I can do. It's just painting with prose for me.

Meredith said...

Haha, writing is definitely my only creative talent. But I'd love to learn more about photography. I love capturing moments.

Melissa Sarno said...

In addition to my novel and short-story writing, I write at my job, which includes writing song lyrics for kids! I never knew I could do that, so I'm glad my creativity took me there. However, I think I need another outlet. I've never been an artist, but painting looks like so much fun. Maybe I'd like to do that...

Matthew Rush said...

Not a thing. I can mix records like a DJ, but I'm not very good at it and it isn't very creative anyway.

Rachna Chhabria said...

I used to sew and design on the computer and create cards. Nowadays all I do is write fiction. I would love to learn how to paint.

Colene Murphy said...

I draw and paint and carve things. But writing, something special and different about that. Love it all though. Love being creative!

Cindy R. Wilson said...

I love almost anything creative. I'm a big fan of music lately, so I'll write songs to play on my guitar and sing. I enjoy drawing and when the mood strikes, painting, too.

Kelly said...

When I was a grade school teacher, I loved using my creativity to tweak lesson plans, make cool bulletin boards, or projects with the kids.
Now my creativity is making up silly song parodies just for fun and writing my poetry and middle grade. Oh and helping my kids with their projects.

Michelle Davidson Argyle said...

Besides writing, I like to cook and take photography. I also like to do woodcuts. Not many people do those these days. :)

Elizabeth Varadan aka Mrs. Seraphina said...

I paint now and then, acrylics, watercolor, and soft pastels. For about five years, I was so involved in writing that I didn't do any of that, and I really missed it. Now it's become my reward for finishing things! I'm taking a wonderful pastel class from an artist whose work I admire as a reward for finishing my last book. (It works, if you have trouble finishing things. I have my eye on another class I want once I finish the book I'm working on now.)

I have not yet tried my hand at poetry, but one day I will.
All said and done clicking (photographs) is the best thing (for me)

Thank you for coming over and commenting on my blog! I'm very happy to meet you.

I tried to do some knitting when my children were little and I couldn't do much writing. But that was it! I used to play the piano and violin, but I don't do that anymore. Full-time caregiver, writing, family history keep me busy!

It looks like you very busy too! Mom, wife, part-time doctor. Wow! I also love poetry (I once won a grand prize, $1000, before such contests became commercial), creative non-fiction, and YA fiction. YA is my favorite next to memoir. Sounds like we're on the same wavelength. I'll keep in touch...

I took dance for several years and still enjoy that. I play piano, not well. And I love to cook creatively.

Melody said...

Let's see, I do write some poetry and songs, and the occasional essay, but none often.

I like to draw with crayons - I really love colors. I also enjoy photograhpy, close-up photography of plants, usually (not people - people move too much). (At least I did like photography, until our camera broke...)

And I'm an amateur graphic designer. :)

Jen Chandler said...

I fiddle with some non fiction articles and essays.

I'm a newbie metal smith and jewelry designer. I also do bookbinding, paper, soap and candle making. I'm learning to take photographs with an old Kodak Brownie my grandmother bought brand new in the 1960s.

And I love, love, love to cook.

I draw and more rarely paint. I miss doing it, but it becomes very time-consuming for me when I start. Haha. I also like doing free-hand calligraphy; I don't actually follow any calligraphy rules or whatever. I just like making things look fancy.

I also used to play the flute, but I haven't touched it in years and I wasn't very good. It's been a while, but I also like playing the Chinese zither.

Carolyn Abiad said...

Well, I used to work in the garden. Flowers were my first outlet before writing came along. Now I forget to water sometimes and well...not so many happy flowers around here anymore. I bake sometimes too.

I dabble in watercolors. If I had a piano, I'd play it (though not very well...). Also I've decided to experiment more with cooking...but the jury's still out on how that will end up. :D

I studied for many years to be an opera singer, actually, but I don't enjoying performing at all. Not the best combination.

Hi Lydia - thanks, so much, for stopping by my blog! :) Nice to meet you, too!

I love to cook, especially bake. I'm forever searching for the next great cookie recipe!

I like to think I take decent pictures. I'd love to take a photography class. I'd also love to take a pottery class (it'd save me on buying it all the time!)

Sadly, I can't sew a stitch. The only bad grade I EVER got in school was 8th grade Home Ec sewing and it kind of scarred me... I dabbled in jewelry making a few years ago. :)

Emy Shin said...

It's drawing for me. I did learn some music, but I'm very much tone-deaf. I learned how to draw before I learned how to write. And I find it very cathartic to draw/sketch when I'm stressed or bored. :)

I am super uncreative. I write A LOT, and other than that I photoshop random pictures. I make banners or just collages of pictures.
Sometimes I built some toys or build on my hamster's cage. So he has more than one level, or more than one toy

I belly dance and sing. Every once in awhile I'll pick up a piece of paper and a pencil to draw...let's just say I'm more a shading type of person.

lbdiamond said...

I'm not creative. Bwahahaha, I'm just nuts.

(Ahem, as you can see in the above example, I have the gift of a strange sense of humor. I use it judiciously. Erm, most of the time. ;) )

I draw a bit but what I really love is painting. I love to paint things with acrylics! It really has been too long since I've done so....

Susan Fields said...

I guess I'm not all that creative other than writing. I do love to bake, though.

You play the piano, how awesome! I've always wanted to be able to play an instrument, especially one as grand as the piano. I crochet~I started as therapy for a broken hand and got hooked~, and I'm a second degree black belt in Tae-kwon-do~yes really.

I write poetry, sometimes. I love to scrapbook-all the arranging, collage and stuff. At work, I'll hang out in the art center and so simple marker pictures and the kids want to take them home...wood burning is fun, too.

Really neat post idea, fun reading about your other talents as well as everyone else's!

Hey there,

I am a culinary artist. At least that it is what I did for fourteen years. Cooking in every kind fo restaurant from Applebee's to fine dining restaurants and hotels has allowed me to really explore cooking as an artform. Of course, these days I am more into making grilled cheese sandwhiches for my daughter and showing her how to make simple things like whipped cream for her dessert.

I do Origami, drawing, teach myself photoshop, play World of Warcraft, play Magic: The Gathering, and read....a lot. I collect and make pop-up books, and I'm fond of Scherenschnitte, the German art of paper-cutting.

I think it's important for any writer to be sort of renaissancey. How can we write about things when we haven't the faintest clue what they're like?
Therefore, I try to dabble in as many things as I can and take interest in everything.

Anstice Potts (Tizzy) said...

Well as well as writing I like to dance, draw, paint, make crafty things (I'll be making my own Christmas decorations this year and blogging about it), I dabble in photography and digital art on photoshop and I also love soap making! Can't cook, sew or play musical instruments for toffee though, so I really admire people who can!

Mike Meraz said...

I do not believe in love at first sight but I do believe
in love at first vibe. it has happened to me many
times before. and those that I love I usually love in a
moment. I do not believe kindness has anything to
do with love, or how nice you are, you just love who
you love and that is all (though kindness does
nurture love). and sometimes this love may not
always be a healthy love, but it is undoubtedly a
connection that is stronger than any act of charity
can bring. I believe there is a spiritual affinity that
you share with certain people. and this affinity is
beyond logic. and that is why some people ask,
"why do you love them?" and all you can say is "I
don't know.. I just do." and it is because there is
something about that person that endears you to
them, that makes you feel, that brings you some
kind of identity that inspires you to be yourself. they
give you the courage to be who you truly are
because you have realized, "hey, I'm not alone." this
is why certain artists inspire us. it is a soul
connection. you have met a fellow soul mate.
someone from the same mold in a sense. I have this
theory about humans. I believe humans are a lot like
animals. not in the sense of being wild. but in the
sense that there are certain breeds. and when you
have met someone from your breed, you know it.

Creative? Well, trying to get my son to eat peas takes a lot of creativity (it doesn't help that peas are a very obvious green), and I've dabbled with poi balls and have the bruises to prove it. But the best kind of creative projects are ones I never intended on doing, such as: midnight "ack-my-science-assignment-is-due-tomorrow" and will you help me Mom?kind of event, fun things with freinds, trying a new recipe for an event. And the company makes up for any discomforts in the learning process.

I find that lately I haven't had much time to do anything creative except write. But I do have a couple knitting projects in the works and I love to bead. I've had a passion for beading since I was a little girl.

One of my favorite creative outlets I haven't done since college. While in school I took a few weaving classes and every now and then have a craving to get back on a loom but they're kind of hard to find, and wayyyyy to expensive to buy. So until I'm rich and have the space and money for a loom, I stick to the knitting :)

great question. i used to to do fun things to get creative. weirdly, watching a horror movie (which i don't normally watch) can boost my creativity for a few days afterward. experiencing fear seems to open up something inside me. now at this stage of my life, i'm just attempting to get out from under the stress i feel, 'cause there ain't no creativity fer me beneath pressure.
